All About Justin, TX
Justin might be a small town, but it has a very unusual history. In 1848, several dozen devotés of French utopian socialist Étienne Cabet tried to found an Icarian community in what is now Justin, but the attempt failed due to internal feuding.
The town’s name, despite what a lot of people think, has nothing to do with the Justin Boot Company. The community petitioned postal authorities in 1887 to name their post office in honor of Justin Sherman, a chief Santa Fe Railroad engineer.
Justin, Texas has been in the news recently because, in the summer of 2020, it is where one of the FBI Ten Most Wanted Fugitives was captured. The man was Yaser Abdel Said, a Lewisville taxi driver accused of murdering his two teenage daughters. He disappeared after the murders and evaded justice for twelve years with the help of his son and brother. In the end, even though there was a $100,000 reward for his capture, he was arrested thanks to “good old-fashioned, aggressive, initiative-based police work.”
